MALE HORMONE REPLACEMENT

Male Hormone Replacement

Headaches — Notebook With Notes in Yorba Linda, CA
Andropause, also known as the “male menopause” is Androgen Deficiency in the Aging Male (ADAM). Andropause results from a decrease in levels of active testosterone in the blood, which occurs with an increase in age. After the age of 40, male testosterone levels tend to drop, and estrogen (the “female” hormone) levels tend to rise. This creates an imbalance in the body, causing potential changes in cortisol (stress hormone) levels, which may result in weight gain.

  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Changes in mood and mental function (lack of energy, irritability, etc.)
  • Decreased muscle mass or muscle strength

  • Increase in age
  • Imbalance of the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis

If I need a prescription for testosterone, is this the same as the steroids that athletes and bodybuilders use?

Good question! It’s important to know the difference between natural testosterone (what is used for medical treatment of andropause) and anabolic synthetic steroids. Anabolic steroids are synthetic versions of testosterone, used for the building of muscle. On the other hand, natural testosterone used for andropause is androgenic, meaning it will affect male sex characteristics. Side effects seen in anabolic steroid users are much more severe and common than in patients receiving testosterone replacement therapy.
